George B.
1997
Lee Tergesen plays Frank, a belligerent barfly at the pub where
George works as a janitor. Something about Lee's appearance and
performance here reminds me of Robert Conrad -- he's cocky,
combative and muscular.
The title character is played by David Morse, who also was the
lead in "Hack" (Lee was in the
pilot episode). Morse, of course, got his big acting break in Tom
Fontana's "St. Elsewhere" in the early 1980s.
Lee/Frank appears in two scenes, both about 5 minutes long, and
his character serves to remind George of just how stupid he is. In
fact, Frank routinely gets really angry about how stupid George
is.
"Variety" called "George B" a "slight
but sporadically amusing comedy" that has elements of deadpan
farce, 1940s film noir, and a touch of Forrest Gump. A good synopsis
of the film can be found here.
"George B" debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in
January 1997.
