Gary Cole switches sides,
but still in line of fire

BEVERLY HILLS - Gary Cole, whose career began when he played a convicted
murderer in "Fatal Vision," returns to the TV crime genre as the star of
the new TNT series "Wanted," premiering July 31. He plays another brooding
character - but this time one on the right side of the law.
"I don't know that he's dark," Cole told members of the Television Critics
Association yesterday of his character Conrad Rose, who leads a special
task force devoted to the capture of Los Angeles' 100 most wanted
criminals. "But he has to deal with darkness."
In "Wanted," Rose gets to pick his high-caliber team. He's also the
separated father of two who is constantly struggling to balance time on
his job and time with his kids. He also must try to remain on speaking
terms with his estranged wife, Lucinda.
Cole is especially excited by the show's tone and look. It's rated TV-MA,
so it's very gritty, and it's shot completely on location, which adds to
its atmosphere and realism.
Besides Cole, the show stars Ryan Hurst ("Taken"), Rashida Jones ("Little
Black Book"), Benjamin Benitez ("Tru Calling"), Josey Scott of the rock
group Saliva, Chris J. Kelly ("Medical Investigation"), Sasha Pieterse
("Family Affair"), Lee Tergesen ("Oz") and Dedee Pfeiffer ("For Your
Love").
"People ask, 'Where do you shoot?'," says Cole, "and the answer is,
'Everywhere.' And you see that, and that's a real asset. Literally, it's
out of the back of a truck."
One of Cole's co-stars, Tergesen, is enthusiastic about a different
element of the show. "Wanted" creator Jorge Zamacona, who had worked with
Tergesen on the frank and brutal HBO prison drama "Oz," wrote the
character of Eddie Drake for the actor and pitched him the part.
"When I found out that if Eddie had sex at all, it was going to be with
women," Tergesen said, "I said, 'Okay, I'll do it.' "
